LEX SOCIETAS HIGH SCHOOL PRE-LAW FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM
The Lex Societas Scholars Program is a free 10-week intensive criminal and constitutional law course. Through this course, students will be exposed to the fundamentals of each through interactive lessons, thought-provoking discussions, and engaging assignments/projects. For students who wish to gain a better understanding of the law, kickstart a potential future in law, or simply understand how the law impacts our society, this is the course for you!
ABOUT THE PROGRAM
LESSONS
Our instructors at the Lex Societas Scholars Program are high school students as well as current law students and are thoroughly trained prior to teaching the course. The lessons instructors teach are intended to spark independent thought, class collaboration, and fruitful discussion. Lessons will typically introduce background information, interesting case studies, and other interactive activities such as debates, mock trials/moot courts, and games. The program also invites numerous guest instructors who specialize in law: professors, attorneys, judges, and more.
CERTIFICATES
All students have the ability to achieve an honorary certificate from the Lex Societas Scholars Program. Completion of 75% of homework assignments, the final project, as well as regular attendance are mandatory in order to receive a certificate. If you are seeing this after November 8th for the 2023-2024 program, unfortunately, you will not be eligible to receive a certificate. However, we welcome you to join and learn!
MEETINGS
Meetings will take place once a week and will run for no more than 50 minutes. Meetings will be every Wednesday from 8 pm EST to 8:50 pm EST. Each week, instructors will switch between teaching criminal and constitutional law, and so ultimately there will be 4 lessons in criminal law and 4 lessons in constitutional law. The last two weeks will be dedicated to projects and project presentations.
LEX SOCIETAS MENTORSHIP PROGRAM
The Lex Societas Mentorship Program is an opportunity for high school students to gain insights about law school, advice about areas and specialties in law, and personalized guidance about navigating through college from law students across the nation. Mentorships will last for 3 days between a law school student (mentor) and a high school Lex Societas member (mentee).
The mentorship/matching process will be detailed in accordance with mentor/mentee preferences as well as shared interests, passions, similarities, availability, and geographical compatibility (information garnered through applications).
This program will be free for all students interested, and applications will be accepted on a rolling basis as long as there are available mentors.
THE ROLE OF THE MENTOR:
The mentor (law student) will have the role of giving advice and insights into law school. Mentors and mentees can communicate and decide when to meet and what to talk about on their own accord. There is no hour quota or requirement for mentors to fulfill, this making this role very low commitment. However, we hope that mentors will do their best to help out their mentee as much as possible.
THE ROLE OF THE MENTEE:
The mentee (high school student) will have the role of driving conversations and asking questions about anything they are curious about or need advice for when it comes to a future in law. Mentees are expected to keep the discussions professional. Spots are first come first serve–there is no guarantee that all applicants will have a mentor due to limited availability. If such a case occurs where an applicant doesn’t have a mentor, they will be placed on a waiting list and will not have to re-apply.
